Two or three bolt Starter????

Need to replace the starter on my 1997 XLT 4.6l 4X4.

Some of the starters I'm seeing are 2 bolt attachment and some are three bolt. How do you know which to order???

Please help; don't want to crawl under there again!

Don't know about 4.6 but my 5.4 is three bolts. Not sure if it will help but I know there very similar motors.

I've never seen a Ford modular engine with a two bolt starter.

Turned out to be a three-bolt. Got the lower two bolts out, but that third one is going to be a bitch. I can feel it, but can't see it. Seen the videos of going in from the wheel well, but still looks like a PITA. Anyone else got a trick to remove it?

Wheel well or by touch only. Your choice.

By touch here. As long as you have the correct extension on hand, it's fairly easy.... IMO.

Went in thru wheel well; wasn't too bad to remove that way; 13mm socket/u-joint/12" of extensions/ratchet with handle that turns when you don't have enough room to swing it (boy, am I glad I bought this a few years back).
