oil leak

My brother-in-law has a 99 xlt 4x4 5.4L with an oil leak. I'm trying to help him figure out where the leak is at and think I may have possibly found it. Not being a Ford guy I found a tube that I don't know what it is or where/what it attaches to so I could use some help from the community. The tube in question is about 5/16" in diameter behind the starter and housing. It looks like some kind of overflow pipe or tube.

Sorry my level of membership indicates I'm not able to post attachments. There is another thread on here that has a picture showing the tube in question. That thread is about the steps to replace a starter. I wish I could be more helpful by posting a picture.

No one can post attachments, it's not allowed. There is s stickie thread at the top of Questions about the Site forum that explains how to post pictures.

How about posting a link to the post you found? Right click on the post number at the very top right of the post, next to the little triangle. Either that or right click on the pic itself and post a link to the pic.

Off the top of my head, without seeing a pic, it could be the A/C condensate drain or the tranny vent or the front axle vent.

Vent tube off the top of the trans

If that is leaking trans fluid it is over pressurized... then I would check the fluid level. Other possibility is the fluid is too hot

That's the tube. I couldn't find the thread it was in to link it into this thread. Thanks for info. He's getting the trans fluid changed & flushed. I'll be sure to let him know about the overheating possibility.

Does the starter have oil on it?

My 2002 5.4 had an oil leak on the passenger side head at the back. It would run down and drip off around the starter.
