01 Supercrew Differential Rebuild

Was going to rebearing my 9.75 differential myself but the Ford dealer is telling me it requires the pinion depth setting tool. Is this correct? Should I rebuild myself or take to a dealer? I have rebuilt many differentials but have never used this tool.

That's very interesting to me that you've rebuilt "many" differentials and don't know anything about pinion depth! Setting backlash and other items of a "properly" rebuilt rear end is almost an art form. Not impossible with the right tools, but something to be haphazardly thrown together either.

I have rebuilt many diffs, just never on a ford. I never used a pinion depth tool. We check and adjust rolling torque, backlash and the wear pattern. A dial indicator and dial type torque wrench is needed along with the specs.

Yes you need to setup the pinion depth to setup the correct ring and pinion teeth mesh.

what exactly are you "rebuilding" in it?

I didn't say that I didn't know about pinion depth I just have never had used the ford tool that they said was required. I was going to replace the pinion and carrier bearings.
