power steering pressure hose

2001 F150, 4x4, M5OD, 4.6L V8

For those of you changing the pressure hose on the power steering unit, I thought I would share some observations with you. Take them for what they're worth. I'm sure the more learned folks will correct me/chime in

1. Jack the truck up and support with jack stands.
2. Turn the wheels full left
3. the top of the pressure hose is most easily reached via the top. Take the fan and shroud off the radiator. This lets you easily get to the nut. The lower radiator hose could come off but it's messy and not totally necessary. it's a 9/16" wrench.
4. Once that comes off, then comes the fun. The 11/16ths nut on the pump side is a real bear. I couldn't get any tools near the nut because of the pulley system in place. I did cut the metal part of the hose within about 1/2" of the nut itself. That didn't help the 11/16ths ratchet go on. apparently I rounded off the nut somewhere along the struggle. so I heated up an 18mm ratchet (loose, but heat expands it so it was snug) and finally got it to break off. Once off, the new hose went on without issues.
5. I did make a tool for the job. the 11/16ths wrench...I modified it a bit. I cut about a 25 degree segment out of the closed end of the socket so it would just slide over the steel part of the hose. That works well but it doesn't allow you to really torque on the nut to tighten it. Regardless it will go back on.
6. Overfill the reservoir to about 1/2" over the "full" line and turn on the truck (while up on jack stands). Turn the wheel back and forth a few times and check the level to make sure it's not too low. It should fall to about right between the "full" and "empty" line.

I hope this helps you guys. I searched for this info on here in the 97-03 section of the forum and didn't find much. Take care you guys!
