No. it doesn't call for Mercon. It use to, but it wasn't near good enough with controlling the heat. Even fresh would heat up and that heat would eventually compromise the transmission..... - Could explain further..

Best fluid is the Amsoil IMO, -as I posted previously. -At the very least , run Merc V. When I converted over from Mercon to Amsoil in my E40D, there was a bunch of clutch material (Automatic Trans Clutch Mat) in the accumulator body. This was causing the pistons to hang up and stick which in-turn would cause the trans to slip and shift funny. If you want to save that E4OD, there may still be time to. Read my first post.

I did that top mine years ago, - never a problem since.

I don't mean to argue but I did find store brand Mercon at my local o'reilly.

Jbrew, I meant to reply to glc who said that you could no longer get Mercon.

If you repaired the line with parts store fuel line(common mistake) it will fail again in short order. Hose for transmission fluid is specific stuff.

Yea I know, I used hydraulic hose and it was the clamp that failed anyway. But thanks

I wouldn't use that store brand Mercon, I would use Mercon V. There's a reason Ford replaced Mercon.
