'01 Cold Start Issue
'01 Cold Start Issue
Took a video of what's going on when I tried to start (this first happened three weeks ago).
Bought this '01 in July, my first truck, 81K miles. It will start up and then die, ultimately getting to a point where it wont' fire. You'll hear it turning over. Did it three weeks ago and then no issue. Yesterday AM did it and this AM did it. All three were pretty cold mornings here in Wisconsin.
Now, I did find a sheet how to get it in to Dealer Test mode. Did that and funny thing is that it turned over and started. Turned it off, let the instrument cluster reset, and then it started up fine.
Thoughts on where my issue may lie?
No cigar as they say.
If the motor will start at times , and the Theft lamp does not flash, the issue is not in the dash.
If the lamp does flash it may be the key. If there is a PATS issue it inhibits fuel to the engine.
First thing is to remove the Idle Air Controller and fully clean it to be sure it's not sticking closed from the last hot engine use.
It's located on top of the engine a cylinder shape with a connector attached.
While in there remove the air hose from the throttle body and spray clean the throttle bore and plate..
After all is put back together, power down by taking the positive lead off the battery for a minute then reconnect.
Start engine. It should come up to high idle for a couple minutes then slowly come down to normal idle.
Let run to fully hot.
Drive several miles, so several restarts.
The reason for all this is the computer has to relearn cold starts and hot starts routines involving all the items it has to handle and rebuilds the fuel tables over several drive cycles..
The bottom line is when a fault like this is repaired it's not instant because the PCM does not know it was done so needs to relearn the normal routine and not use the 'shifted fault' table settings.
There after all starts should be normal if there are no other faults present affecting starting.
Good luck.

I had the exact no start situation with my 2001, almost seemed hit or miss. I cleaned the IAC real well, it worked great for about a month and then started having a few random no starts (not as frequent as before). Cleaned the IAC again and did the throttle body at the same time. Been over a year since and no issues to date (knock on wood).
