Common sense should tell you that if you take chances off road then depend on it for everyday reliability, sooner or later you will get stuck from a problem.
To many possible things could happen.
Consider a second vehicle.
Good luck.

Look on the door jamb sticker for the TRANS code. "U" is a 4R70W, "E" is a E4OD.

Get a small beater commuter car if you drive an hour each way to work. The gas savings will pay for it fairly quickly.

I planned on getting a second vehicle soon but I like having a truck with 4 wheel for the winter and when the geniuses I work with tear up the parking area

How severe is your off roading...there's a pretty broad range there. With off roading, it's safe to assume low speed, 1st gear (no torque converter locking capability), high throttle settings. Biggest thing you can do to protect the tranny in this environment is keeping the fluid fresh and keeping it cool; cool being #1. I'm gonna make another (unsafe this time) assumption that you don't have a real temp gauge and are probably running the stock tranny cooler; both of which are not conducive to your activities. That's where I'd start.

The stall is pretty low in our trucks. Raising the stall approx. 400 rpm will put closer to the powerband and give you more power off the line and when climbing. Make sure it's a lock up converter.
