Frame Painting Question
Frame Painting Question
I'm tearing my truck down to fix it up as I put it back together, and one of the things I plan to do is paint the frame with either Chassis Saver or Por-15. What do you guys recommend doing with the interior of the tubular frame components? Namely, the two long rectangular pieces that run the length of the truck. Access to the interior of those pieces is obviously extremely restricted, but it seems kind of pointless to paint just the exterior; I can see with a flashlight that the interior is corroded as well, and it will surely just keep rusting from the inside out. Thanks for any thoughts.
There's a wide array of DIY techniques to paint inside a chassis. You just need to get creative. I've seen guys spray POR-15 with those hand pressurized insecticide sprayers, although it wastes quite a bit. Or you could use the brush on a stick idea...
I've gone and just painted the exterior of the frame rails... But it was just for looks since it was more of a faded gray and I don't have any worries about rust down here.
You could get a rust converter that's a thin liquid like water, and find a way to spray it all inside the tubes. It won't give you a thick coating like POR-15, but it will turn the rust into a hard black crusty coating.
We do have rust issues here in Maine commonly, and several of the guys in Maine4x4.org have used and swear by POR-15. I'm about to do the same project on my truck, and going to go with POR-15 followed by a bedliner coat. I think one guy even got NAPA to mix bedliner with his factory chevy color to do his rockers. Many New Englanders oil the underside of their vehicle to prevent road salt corrosion, so maybe pump some oil into the frame rails? May not be very Eco friendly / Green
Down south, some people, ahem.....use that ^ special blend to preserve wood floored trailers and cut dust down on gravel drives.
Thanks for the thoughts guys. Sounds like I just need to get creative and have at it. I bet I could rig up some kind of sprayer that has a long hose that I pull through the frame, spraying as it goes.
