Now tackling the ac

OK, so my AC wasn't cooling the truck. I bought the DIY stuff, followed the instructions, and turned the ac to max and voila, the cold air I wanted.
Took my truck out for a ride, after about 15mins, the ac wasn't cooling again.
Started driving home and all of a sudden the ac was back on.

10 min later, no ac.

What gives?

Go check the clutch gap, then the operation of the temperature blend door.

The gauge showed 38 psi and when it kicks in, it's damn cold

It could be the cycling\pressure switch, the compressor clutch, the compressor clutch relay, the PCM, or an electrical short/open, etc.

I'm uploading the HVAC portion of the service manual to my FTP site. Let me know when you have it so I can remove it. It's for a 1997, but the procedures should be the same.

Just realized something....When I turn the heater on or the A/C I hear the pulley spinning on and off all the time. It may come on for about 5 sec and off for about the same time. It does this continuously as long as I have selected defrost, heater, a/c. But if I have just fan on I don’t hear the noise.

Its normal for the compressor clutch to engage and disengage any time an A/C mode is selected - including defrost. 5 seconds seems a bit short though - of course I'm in 110 heat right now. If the clutch never disengaged, that's usually a good indicator of low refrigerant.

Generally one line coming off the compressor will be very cool to the touch and the other quite warm. If yours feels like this, you almost certainly have a blend door issue and I have never fixed one on this truck, but it usually requires pulling the dash off. Maybe someone else will chime in on that.

When the compressor clutch engage and disengage is it normal to be loud. I can hear it from inside the cab very clear.

The clutch engagement itself, or the compressor? I can't clearly hear mine from inside the cab. The compressor should never be loud, but the clutch will give a solid crack.
