I'd like to get some opinions from the people that know fords unlike me to let me know what to watch out for when i go see this truck.

It's a 1999 Ford f350 single cab long bed auto 4x4 5.4L 136k miles, crank windows, manual locks, aftermarket stereo, 37" nitto mud grapplers on some 22" rims....which i don't like. He honestly says theres nothing wrong with it other than minor dings and dents, says it has a cold air intake, gibson headers, flowmaster 40 exhaust, says only 1 problem he had was one day it wouldnt start he thinks its the fuel pump but he's driving to me some time this week so i would imagine the truck is mechanically fine, he doesn't know if any of the fluids were recently changed except for the engine oil....

What should i watch out for? Thanks guys appreciate it

 

ensure it's been re-geared, 37" tires won't be too friendly on the transmission or drivability of the truck (many morons will argue the point BUT it's been proven time and time again)

check for signs of cobled work, ie stereo wiring, and other things that just look out of the ordinary

check the fluid levels and for signs of leaks

check tire wear

I'm not sure where you are from, so rust might be an issue for you so check the ususal area's

 

I'm in Philly, he's close to poconos. Tires are practically new but yes ill look for wear, definitely check trans fluid and oil,

Is there any common problems with these trucks i need to know about? he says ac/heat and 4x4 works great, as far as i know no rebuilds, him and me never talked about gears so i'll ask today.

 

a lot of people FAIL to properly torque the sparkplugs so ask if he's expeienced that and if he has then find out what kind of insert was used and if it was steel or alminum

if there's been any steel inserts used, simply walk away or negotiate the truck further down in price to include what it's gonna cost you for a new head(s)

 

using steel does what? theres no common problems on these trucks?

 

Inserts are only used if a spark plug loosens and blows out, which is a common issue with that engine. The head only has 4 threads in the plug hole and the factory torque spec is insufficient. He is telling you to find out if this has ever happened.

Otherwise, the 5.4 is a very reliable engine, but in a F-350 with big wheels and tires don't expect much performance or gas mileage.

Keep in mind that the book value on that truck is only about 4 grand.

 

Damn, gotcha i'll definitely look into that and kbb in fair (which is worst condition) is $6,390, obviously ya never get kbb but i think 4 grand for a truck that has as much done to it as it does, i think it's over 4, i'll post a list of the new parts it has later

 

When you want to pass someone on the highway make sure you call ahead and let them know.

5.4 in a 350 with big rubber will be pretty gutless without good gears.

 

I used KBB to get that $4k number. Mods and "new parts" do not add ONE CENT to the book value. If you are picking options, if it's not a FACTORY option, do not select it.

 

I used kbb and picked all the factory things except the wheels/tires/ upgraded stereo system, gotcha though

 

With crank windows and manual locks, I'm assuming it's an XL. I just reran it - F-350 Super Duty Regular Cab, 4x4, 5.4, auto, XL, 136k miles, Zip 19150, I checked no options other than what was already checked, and private party in "good" is $3985.

 

I'd offer him $4k for it. Given the little engine, big frame and big tires, he is probably unloading it for gas sakes, so you have the power to talk him down.

 

I wouldnt go much higher than 4g. A gas motor in a 350 seems to defeat the purpose of having a 1 ton truck. As others said, add massive mud tires and probably no new gears and you've really got a hog. I would look at the radiator support and rocker panels as these tend to rust out on the 150's Im sure its the same on the 350's. Be sure to check the back side of the rockers and cab corners too people often try to band-aid the rust. Good luck

 

Not a big, torquey gas motor such as the V-10 or 6.2. Not everyone needs a diesel but does need the higher load capacity.

 

I should have been more specific with that comment GLC. A 5.4 gas motor in a 350 seems to defeat the point of having a 1 ton truck. The V10 gas motor is a solid gas motor and does great in a 250 or 350.
