no shift solenoid 4x4 still work? for the complete dummy.

So Ive been having 4x4 troubles ever since I put my tcase back into my 98 automatic 4.6 v8 and I'm stuck at this point. I removed my front drive shaft, and my shift solenoid was out for a couple days, while it was my gf accidently put it into 4L. I didn't realize it for about half a day when my 4x4 dash light appeared. Even though both those things were out at the time is there anyway that it could've engaged into 4L? Bc now the light is still on even though i switched it back to 2 and I did put my solenoid back in. The truck is kind of running like 4l my rpms seem a bit higher and it switches gears a bit higher as well. I don't fully know what I'm doing so I could just be paranoid.

If the transfer case motor is in the 4L position, the circuit board sliding contacts completes a connection back to the PCM as a signal to change the shift sked.
This changes the RPM the shift points occur at in the program.
If that feature was not there, you would wind the pi## out of the motor getting it to upshift.
Also the transfer case is in the lowest gear reduction for 4L because the transfer case motor turns a shaft to cause it to be.
Don't know if this is your problem but that's how that works.
Good luck.
