Road trip to Montana

2002 5.4 4x4, supcrew, 180'000 miles

I'm going to Montana in the summer for an internship and driving from Florida.

I'm going to put in new plugs, fuel-filter, flush radiator, new egr, new IAC( because the current one is broken) and a few other air/emission parts.

I replaced the U joints a few months back while i got my rear end serviced.

I was wondering what kind of preventive maintenance I should do before I go besides the ones I listed?

thanks

Everything you listed about sums up the general things except for maybe your upstream O2 sensors and then just making sure things like brakes and tire pressure is good

Blue Jay: ive heard that doing a full flush can sometimes have adverse affects on an older tranny? True False???

Jdeacon:collecting water and vegetation samples

Super Lariat: both my left O2's are bad supposedly but they only act up when its cold so i really dont care

Well as of know my dad shot down the idea of me driving out there :/

in hind site i have a nice list of things my dad can fix on my truck while I'm there

You don't *flush* the tranny, that can hurt. You *exchange* the fluid.

I second the motion of changing your trans fluid. Do not get a flush as mentioned as a reverse flush from the lube shops *can* dislodge crap inside the TC and pan and when put through the transmission again will plug pathways and... you know the rest. A pan drop will do wonders.

The machines at the lube shops can be used in the passive mode as exchange machines. The exchange is done with the engine running, the internal tranny pump does the work. If you had an older truck, it would have a torque converter drain plug and you wouldn't have to use a machine.

i just drove my 2001 supercrew up from los angeles with my family towing my 16' toy hauler. did the drive in 2 days 70 all the way. did all you said plus i pressure bled the brakes rotated the tires and replaced the shocks. not 1 problem at all. i still have to replace my plugs. 152,000 miles averaged 8.5 mpg towing.

safe trip
