battery drain
battery drain
i have about a 1/2 amp draw on my battery. i pulled fuse 103 under the hood and it dropped to less than .05 amp draw. i put fuse 103 back in and i proceeded to the under dash fuse panel and it seems as though when i pull fuses 14 and 15 my draw drops back down to normal. any ideas where to go from here. also a sidenote...my OD fuse keeps blowing. it will work for a while then it just quits.
Fuse 103 sends power to the interior fuse panel. Fuse 14 Protects the Battery Saver Saver relay and the Interior Lamp Relay. Fuse 15 among other things protects the GEM. Check Relay #2 in the cab. It is the Battery saver relay. With the fuses in place pull the relay and see if the drain stops. One thing though you have to wait 45 minutes with the door open. The GEM controls this relay and after 45 minutes shuts it off to protect the battery. If you pull it before the GEM has turned it off it will appear to not be turning off the circuit.
Well I waited 45 mins but when I opened the door to pull the relay im assuming that reset the timer. I dont quite understand how im supposed to do this test. Sometimes I have a 1/2 amp draw and other times I have 1/4 amp draw and nothing is different
Open your door and use a screwdriver to flip the latch in the door to turn off the interior light. Leave door open, but be sure not to try and slam it shut, cause you will break something. Wait 45 minutes, then begin your testing.
I had issue like yours, and after much testing, I believe it was a poor ground wire from frame to chassis, under passenger footwell. I replaced all the ground straps, and added another one from engine ground to frame, and seems to be solved. The info I read, was the bad ground was "waking" the computer, causing a draw over time.
Worth the time to check them, too. Also could be a bad battery cable.
