Modular 5.0 Swap
Modular 5.0 Swap
Hey all,
I'm very very interested in this swap for my truck (1998 F-150 4.6 with a 4R70W trans). I've found a few links to build ups, but nothing with any useful information except this (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=316074) but its a different style completely than our trucks. I'm looking for information specifically dealing with wiring issues and options. I know Ford has a control pack for the 5.0 and trans controllers our abundant for my transmission but other than that I'm not finding much. I want to avoid this
in doing the project. With the 5.0 being based on the 4.6, seems like a great idea to me! Any information is greatly appreciated.
Also, I found this awesome bit of information in my dealings. It's a breakdown of the coyote. http://www.mustang50magazine.com/tec...e/viewall.html
Thanks!

Things to consider;
Will it fit in the engine bay?
Mounts, location, fuel supply, transmission attachment.
How will you control it?
Use existing PCM or aftermarket or 2012 truck PCM.
How will you control instrument cluster and other body functions?
Your truck uses a central timer or a GEM. The Aftermarket is unknown and the 2012 PCM is not compatible with your truck system.
If it were me I would use the Ford racing controls and make them run my instrument cluster. But I have a manual transmission so it is less of a problem. In your case I would rewire the truck with 2012 sensors and system and use a 2012 auto tranny. I would keep the old PCM to run the instrument cluster.

Avoiding is a huge term here.
There are so many differences you better be prepaired for a long bout of problem solveing.
1. The program from your version has advanced one version to a system called "CAN" and is not compatable with your version.
2. The wire harness is all different.
3. The trans control out of the new PCM is totally different.
4. The PATS system the new PCM uses will have to be addressed in some way.
5. All the small problems that will come up.
The factory takes years to work out a model so your not going to 'marry' parts in a few months and have it be even near perfect and trouble free.
After it might get done, your now the expert. There is no one to go to for help on a problem you can't solve.
Good luck.

There is a truck with a coyote 5.0 and a 4r100, it is not the best combo with 3.73 gears for city driving...
If one were to conduct this swap I highly encourage the 6speed auto to go with it

You know, when someone brings up the question of a swap like this I find everyone is rather negative about it. Why not try and be theoretical rather than claiming its too difficult to be done?
Coyote swap into Fox Body Mustang: done.
Modular swap into 9th gen F-150: done.
V10 into 10th gen F-150: done.
Powerstroke into 10th gen F-150: done.
Why not Coyote swap into 10th gen F-150? Hell on another messageboard I'm active on the membership swore up and down that a member would never be able to swap a 4WS setup onto a Ford Probe. Boy were they embarassed when he pulled it off.

It is a friend that has installed and been driving a Ford Explorer Sport Trac with a Coyote 5.0l and 6 spd manual...It goes through what issues he had installing it and making it run... And it does run!!

I was one of the first to swap a 5.4 into a 4.6 truck. I didn't ask for help I just did it. I then posted information on how to do it.
I and most likely the others who posted were just listing the hurdles that would have to be overcome inorder to accomplish this project. As was mentionned in one of the posts, it has never been done. So if the OP still wants to do it he can come back and and ask more questions and they will most likely be answered by, what I consider, a very helpful group of individuals. I personnaly will not research this swap untill I see a little more commitment from the OP. Why should I waste any more time?

i contacted a ford 5.0 l coyote crate engine dealer about this exact swap.
he wrote back it was possible but that the computers are so integrated in new trucks these days that i would end up rebuilding much of the truck and splicing the harness so many times and hope like hell no electrical gremlins started popping up. he said besides the cost of the engine, 6500, 1800 for wiring harness possibly new tranny, i would spend another 5-10 000 on labor and various other parts that arent compatible, like ac, pwer steering, alternator, fuel pumps/lines, frame mods, heater core attachments, drive by wire throttle, tranny linkages, et c etc.
so he didnt say it was impossible but go into eyes wide open and wallet wide open lol

That's exactly right.
If anyone has to ask, they have little idea of what is involved.
Why is letting them know, such a crime?
I have done several conversions but not at this level because it was some years ago when systems were not so complex.
Good luck.

A lot of interesting swaps have been done in the 10th gen body, just not everyone posts it online for the world to see. A few years ago me and a buddy rode to Houston to buy some parts from a guy who posted on Craigslist. He met us in a rough looking 98 F150 with a 99' front end swap and had a whole bunch of engine parts he was trying to sell. When I asked him what they were off of, he said he had swapped out his 4.2 for a 70's Mustang Cobra 390? (I think that's what it was, I didn't take pics). But sure enough, he popped the hood and there it was. He said he had re-used most of the factory sensors, MAF, and even the PCM (with a tune obviously). IIRC he said he had pulled most of the EFI components off a newer Explorer 5.0. Everything worked, a/c, heat, even all of the factory gauges on the cluster. I asked him if he had ever posted the build online - his exact response was "Why? It wasn't that hard to do."
Thanks for the opinions all. For clarification, the project won't even be started until this summer at the earliest, I'm just trying to put together my plan of attack to minimize self-inflicted brain damage. The '98 was the first truck I bought. I'm keeping it around purely out of sentiment and want to take on a massive project with it. I was looking for detailed information from somebody that has done a very similar or exact build up so I could start with the most information possible. I know this is no easy task, I know exactly hard this project will be, I just figured this swap would be more common and I could get a better feel for it. Guys on this forum, including most of, if not all of you have done some pretty crazy things and have amazing trucks. So, I figured when the 5.0 came out, it would be number one on the list and there would be a wealth of information.
I absolutely would do the swap as well, but I don't have the 6grand to drop on a engine, and still need a harness, and all that....
Also would consider doing a V10 swap for towing purposes in my red truck.

Here you go, only $8900 but you get the whole car.

For $1000 more, you can get this truck, also with a 5.0
