Just bought a 1999, what do I check for?

I'm finally retiring my faithful 1992 XLT at 253K miles. I just bought a 1999 extended cab 4.6 auto 2x4 with 128 K miles for $3500. It's in great condition but the heater is not working, so I guess I'll be doing the blend door/heater core pretty soon. It also has a cracked windshield and the passenger window motor is out. Antifreeze looks old, any special coolant needed or just the usual 50/50 green? Looking for advice on these repairs and what other things I should check on this truck.

That's a lot for a 99 2wd w/4six. On top of that, you have to fix a bunch of crap lol. Oh well ehh.

Well, the heater core is long PITA job, if that's the problem.

To find specific threads, use the search this forum only option in forum tools. That's over to the right after clicking on the 97-2003 forum heading. Just in case you end wanting to search or find specific topic info. At times that works better than the broad search at the top of the site.

Good Luck.

I think the price was right, in this part of Texas trucks go for a lot and they are usually beat up, high miles, and full of cigarrette smoke. This had low miles, good shape and no smoke. Edmunds values this truck at 3442, 3500 was just right for me.

Heater core, eh? There is a step-by-step floating around somewhere about this very job. You wouldn't believe how many screws and bolts hold that dash together. I don't know the exact number, but I think it's close to 1,000,000. Snug everything up or else you'll have quite an annoying squeak. This helped me a little... but like jbrew said, "if that's the problem."

You should also do your hoses at the same time as well. They tend to tear at the clamps when they get old. Here's the blend door thread...

Things to check? Without any knowledge of the truck, I'd check your spark plugs, transmission fluid, and rear diff fluid.

50/50 green is fine as long as you flush all the old stuff out and do it every 3 years.

Spark plugs - use only Motorcraft, no antiseize, torque to 28 ft/lb.

Damn do the heater core's suck. Took a week for mine. But only worked on it a hour or so a day.
