Think mechanic screwed up

I have a 2002 f150 4x4 with the 5.4l. My rear right Axle Bearing started going bad. Since i just moved i didn't have all my tools so i brought it to a mechanic in the new town to get it fix. I had them do both sides. I told them when i dropped it off that it had the 9.75 rear end. When i went to pick it up they informed me it was a 8.8 so they used the bearing for the 8.8. Do i really have A 8.8 rear end or did they screw up and should I be worried about having the wrong bearings in there? Thank you

you should have the 9.75 if you have the 5.4 motor, unless the motor was previously replaced.

You can count the bolts holding the diff cover on. If 12, it is either a 9.75 or 10.25. Since you did not say whether you have the 7700lbs GVWR, you can assume 9.75. And as stated, I know of no 5.4 with an 8.8 rear.

It isn't the 7700lb gvwr. So i believe its the 9.75 rear end. Is there any side effects to having the axle bearing meant for a 8.8 rear end when my rear end is a 9.75... I just checked and it has 12 bolts on the diff. Cover..

Doesn't matter, same part # (1225) thelariat02. However, bearing quality can be up to you if you purchased third party.

Ok i don't know what they used. They just told me when i picked it up that it was A 8.8 rear end and it ended up being cheaper.. Thank you for all the help. If they are the same part then i won't go back to them to get it changed..

There were some 9.75 rears that used 8.8 axle shafts and bearings.

The 8.8 and 9.75 use the same axle shafts. Identical.

Your fine.

same diameter yes but 9.75 is 34 spline and 8.8 is 31 spline. The 9.75 are also shorter. 10.25 is 35 spline.

Like mine as I found out when I replaced the rear axle seals.
