Look for a Harley or Lightning engine. Complete - It searches your area for you after you thro your zip code in. - Best site for that out there IMO.
The Lightning engines for years 99 - 03 or 04 will all work in the 97-03 F150's. 4x4's and 4x2's.. All.....
Easiest and cheapest way, that's almost always worth while, - A used "L" engine from salvage. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay or whatnot.

They both seem to be the same engines vin 3 (you mentioned vin L, am i looking at the right motor?) They are both P.I. and I believe will both work well with my truck. Any ideas on which one might edge out the other? (same prices btw) thanks!
Alrighty quick update, im ordering the 99-00 Lighting crate motor from powertrain products. I am still up in the air about the intake manifold (stock aluminum, performance 4.6 with plates, porting y/n) I am in the process of removing the old 4.6. lots of pictures and notes which ill be posting later.

I would love to put one on and it is definitely an upgrade that i will be doing. But for now i have to flush all of my money at college (damn its expensive). But as soon as i can afford it will be going on
(everyone needs a supercharger!)
(everyone needs a supercharger!)
So i am now deciding between a used lightning engine (with Supercharger) (120k miles) and a crate 99 engine (lighting longblock). does the used engine have too many miles? i will be installing it without the supercharger. I will eventually be rebuilding it and adding the supercharger/tune, but im hoping that ill get a few more miles out of it. Does anyone have an idea on the life of these engines? I have done a spreadsheet with costs/adv/dis etc and it seems that overall, the used seems to be cheaper with more options, but it depends on the life of the engine. any ideas?
depends on how much boost and how hard you are. There are guys with more than 200,000 miles out of these engines with no major problems. past that and I can see pullies, water pumps, valves, etc going out/wearing down
well, ill have no history of the engine so it will be a shot in the dark. ill have to try to nurse it for a few years before i can rebuild everything. kind of a pull and pray scenario thing. it comes with a 90 day warranty so ill at least be covered for a little while. oh and since im on the rebuilding subject. has anyone rebuilt a supercharger? i dont think it would be too difficult and hopefully not too expensive
i heaaaar that lol. i looked at a kit for a carb once.... crazy stuff that. I did some poking around and it doesnt seem bad. ill probably rebuild it while im waiting for my engine to go bad. hm.. side thought. i know with the aluminum heads, the exhaust manifold bolts always seem to break off. is there something else i can use like are there aluminum bolts?
