Finally after years of searching

Well for about the last 3 years I've been looking for a hurst short throw for my truck, 98 f150 with a 4.6 m5od. And I finally found one kinda. I found out that the 391-5020 shifter base and the 391-5026! All I will have to do is maybe get a different shaft and I'll be golden

User JMC has one or had one. Not sure he's still using it supercharged, but he would have any info you needed to use one. He started out with a 4.6L M5OD. Yea they are rare.

He has since replaced the engine w/5.4L SC. Not sure what tranny he running now. I doubt it's the M5 , -to weak. But you never know lol.

I think JMC still has the M5OD - last I knew he was on his 5th one and he's seriously thinking about a ZF conversion.

yea the M5OD's are a joke, they may be ok behind rangers and 4.2's but not a 4.6

Sigh, I picked up a stick shift f-150 because my brother had issues with his auto. Plus I like to drive manual.

Sad to hear that ford couldn't build a proper transmission back when these trucks were new.

The M5OD-R2 is not the same as the M5OD-R1 used in rangers, and can out handle a stock 4R70w just as well. As long as you ain't stupid with it, I think the 4.6L is a very good combo with the M5OD-R2. Their weekness is high horsepower add ons and applications, which a slushbox is equally screwed. My stick is fine and still have a the stock clutch. Too bad the head gaskets blew...

The M5OD-R2 is fine behind a stock 4.6.

Aside from just wanting manuel shifter, the 4R70 can be custom built by a shop like Level 10 that is near bullit proof the normal run of 4.6/5.4 even with mods would almost never tear up, but it cost some money to do that level.
You can even have one built that does not have the low first gear (W) type so it becomes a more even gear change from first to second.
Custom converter stall to match the cam, weight, gear ratio.
It's worth it if to many manuels are being lost to high torque, weight and sticky tires.
It's a once and done thing.

Well you can throw enough money at anything to make it do whatever you want.
