Of course the following reply is with respect.
If your not good with mechanics, don't try any involved change.
Look at a and read the thread called 'Starting a V10 swap" and see all the hassle.
You have about two good choices.
1. To have your motor built with updated heads, cams, intake manifold mods and headers that will get you into the 375 to 400 hp range with a 4.6.
2. Super charge a good stock motor.
3A. Have a performance shop do it all because either option should be programmed tuned on a Dyno.
Please bring big wallet.
Goopd luck.

My advice, don't worry about it. If you're going to just cruise around or mudding, that engine will be just fine. As far as smoking Chevy's, it doesn't really matter. Sooner or later you will grow out of your teens or twenties and realize it doesn't really matter...

'nuff said.
A good tune will wake the engine up enough to be a little more fun to drive, but a truck's not really built to race anyway. Making it sound good will make it more enjoyable as well.

A tune won't really do much for the 98 4.6 or 5.4. It will adjust the shift points for a preference tune, but performance wise. Nope.

The 2001 4.6 - That year + can gain from a tune.
The 1999 5.4 - Same, that model year and up.

I find my 4.6 to be quite peppy. Of course I'm used to driving slow trucks. It's not a car dude. My girlfriends 4 cylinder G6 can smoke a lot of race trucks. If you want a race car buy one or a lightning. Other than that it takes off from a stop just as fast as everyone else. Even capable of getting a ticket. Side note: racing is for the track not the street.

you can do a 4.6 4v swap, im still researching, and searching for money, more money, and parts. Just the heads will give that NPI 4.6 about a 100 hp boost. then if you supercharge it, ohhhh baby!

The 4.6 is a good, reliable, pretty good on gas engine.
I find it peppy as well. Very suitable for muddin, some towin, haulin, etc
My 4.6 has 375 000 kms.
Yes the 5.4 has more power- but do you need it just for cruzin? no. Do you need it for muddin? debatable. Do you just want more power? Absolutely, who doesn't.

And I agree with everyone else- buy a lightning or be prepared to empty your wallet.

What I would do to your current truck is for looks, function and performance on and off road:

Mild lift with bigger tires
Lockers
Taller gears
better sounding and flowing exhaust
Do a tune up- could wake up your truck a bit if it hasn't been done in a while.
clean maf- same as above
Gotts mod

Drive and enjoy

Enjoy
