Pats code
Pats code
Posted a thread earlier about pats problem, just checked pats code it is a 16 which says no data between modules, check wiring between ECU and Pats
Can anyone tell me if that means my computer has erased again or how to check these wire. I am a woman and have no idea what to do
Thanks

Yes, flash code 16 says transceiver signal not received by the PCM due to a possible wiring issue.
This DTC code can be seen by other means as a HEC code 9681 or a B code of 1681, all mean the same thing..
Programming does not normally erase.
If it did you would not get a specific code.
I can't tell you specificlly, but to look for harness damage from maybe an animal got inside and got hungrey , to a harness dropped down and got tangled in foot etc.
Look around the steering column area under dash.
Good luck with it.

Thank you I will look now. I dont know if you seen my previous post but in November it did completely erase. Ford could not fix it had to send to a private company to restore, but noone has been able to tell me why it happened, so this is a starting point. Thanks
Just for discussion, these units have hardware memory called EPROMS.
What this means is (e)lectronicly (p)rogrammed (r)ead (o)nly (m)emory.
When they are programmed with a special programmer device, the data stays 'nearly forever' in place no matter if power is removed or how long.
Normally you or nothing that happens can erase the data because it in semi permant unless reprogrammed from the outside with a programmer by enabling access to the devices, then altering the data in them.
So, I am a bit skeptical about what happend to yours in the past.
The only non firm memory for changeable data is the key codes when dupping a new key and, then this data storage is pretty hardy, as well.
Any ways, good luck with it.

I just wanted to say thank you for your replys. What you say makes absolute sense. Especially now. I just forwarded you this post. I actually did his suggestion and it worked. My truck is running. Which with what you have told me it seems like maybe this would of done the trick back in November. Had only the ford dealers would have further investigated. Thank you again your reply has given me much better understanding.

Theft flashing, odometer dashes "------", cranks no start
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted a while back with this problem and I think I have found the fix. Time will tell. Original problem: intermittent starting problem where the truck turns over but no start, Theft light flashes, odometer reads dashes. Well after looking over everything on this site and talking to 3 different dealers I still could not find what exactly fit my problem. 3 different Ford dealers had three different "fixes". 1. keys were worn out causing PATS issues, 2. Exciter ring in steering column bad, 3. PCM going bad. Once I figured out that they intended on throwing parts at it to fix it I starting diagnosing the problem myself. After looking over some wiring diagrams I discovered that the fuel pump relay feeds the odometer also. So to test I pulled the relay and tried to start the truck. Doing this gives me the same symptoms as my intermittent starting issues. This problem was always worse when it rained or rapid temp changes occured or it was just real cold out. New fuel pump relay and no problems so far. The relay was triggering a PATS issue due to the connection with the instrument cluster. At least now I know what circuit is giving me problems and if the problem comes up again I can trace this circuit, I hope this info helps someone out.

I agree.
There is no logical reason the pump relay should be associated with the dash power.
I saw this stated but left it go to see what happens.

Code 16 is a no communications between the PAT and PCM.
This code can show up as a B1681 or HEC code 9681 on a dash test.
They all mean the same thing but from different detection points.
Cause is an open, ground or cross in the circuit between the PATS and PCM.
There is no relay directly involved.
