Truck died...possible solutions

Truck stats following post. While driving home from work today, my truck suddenly felt like I had just let off the gas. I looked down, saw the high temp light on and my temp gauge pegged past the red. I immediately pulled over and switched off, checked under the hood only to find nothing seemingly overheating. There was no boiling water, steam, etc, I could even grab the upper radiator hose. After 2-3 min, I turn the ignition only on and all gauges read normal. I crank it up, all normal. I start driving, all is normal. Could this be just my coolant temp sensor going bad, or could something more sinister be at fault? I've never had it overheat before.

If it really wasn't hot, probably the sensor.
