I'm not sure how much a Ford dealer would charge for the OEM replacement. But I have an identical truck (03 FX4 with tow package) and bought a replacement at Advance Auto for $14.00. I had to use wire connectors($2.00) and it took about 20 minutes but I like it better than the OEM look. If you need help with a wire guide or want some pics let me know.
I need to do this also, but I think I would want to do the Direct Connect OEM. If for nothing else, then just my piece-of-mind. I don't use the 7 pin connection, but it had been hacked up pretty bad.
- Can only be used with a factory 4-pole harness
- This will not work with a factory 7-pole harness
I could be wrong though, but I am thinking the last time I was under the rear of the truck, it had a host of wires (due to the 7-pin) going to the frame rail connector

Yeah. Just went out and snapped a pic of my connector, then blew theirs up to compare (Control + ). They do appear to be the same connectors. Pic of mine (left frame rail just behind the tire) :
the factory set-up, it just slides off. 4-pin is rubberized and slides into the groove of the 7-pin bracket.

Should you end up replacing that plug I would be interested in the door for it. My 7-pin plug was relocated to the bumper (see here, a much better location IMO) but the door is long gone. Would really like some protection.
thanks!
the e trailer link is the entire kit including the wiring.
anyone know if i can just get the damaged 7 pin female plug? is there a plug on the back of the 7 pin to the wiring harness or is it hardwired?

$40+ sounds a little steep if it doesn't have the harness. As previously posted, you could just go to a local Napa,O'Reillys or whatever and get just the basic 7 pin plug for cheaper. Just all depends on your preference.
