'98 F150 SC towing?...
Gotta 1998 F150 Super Cab, 4.6L, overdrive, short bed...
Just put a class-III frame hitch on THIS truck I've had in the garage
from my first '98 F150 short bed, V6 5-speed...
NOW...I might need to tow my '56 F100 project down south for a "trade"
and I'm just wondering if I should try to find a car hauler OR a tow
dolly to load this old truck on?
The '56 weighs-in right around 3150...I think...back then there were NO
weights listed on the title...
The original Y-block & Fordomatic have been replaced with a '70 F100
302/C4 combo so I know it is just a "little" bit lighter than the original
drivetrain...
WaddaYa think...it'll be about 560-miles EACH way...
...
PLUS all the parts loaded IN the '98 that go with the sale/trade...
...TCI IFS, No Limit Fat Bar, all the air ride stuff, 9-inch rear...etc...I'm
guessin' that is another couple hundred pounds at least...

Get a trailer - don't even think about a dolly. U-Haul has them, they weigh 2200# empty.
You can tow it as long as you have a 3.55 or 3.73 rear and an automatic tranny, just keep it out of overdrive and keep the speed down to 65 max. You will be right around the towing limit of your truck. It will be way over limits if you have a 3.08 or 3.31 rear or if you have a manual trans.

glc...thanks for the information!...

I just dug out my green 3-book set of repair manuals...sometimes I forget I
have these books...they are suposed to be the same manuls the dealerships use..
Then I went and checked all the codes on the B-pillar tag & this is what I
discovered...
Axle code; H9 = 3.55 LS
Transmission code; U = 4R70W-AOD
Rear springs code; NF = 5560 lbs.
...although there is NOT a "NF" code in the book...there is a "N" and an "F"
code listed seperatly & they BOTH have the SAME rating...
...
AND...I just noticed on the factory installed step-bumper some lettering
stating the MAX tounge weight = 500 lbs. AND the MAX gross trailer weight
at 5000 lbs.
I just noticed it this morning while I was cleaning-out the factory installed
4-pin trailer wiring plug..duh...
It's gonna be REAL close man...'56 weighs in right "around" 3150 as far as I
can gestamate and you said the UHaul car hauler is another 2200#...so that
would put the whole setup right around 5350-5400 lbs.!...NOT counting all
the other parts I gotta load in the bed!...
...
Man thats' cuttin' it REAL close!...anyone interested in a '56 F100 project?...ha-ha...
Maybe I should just wait-it-out a while longer...SOMEBODY's got to be lookin'
for new project...
...
Thanks again...

With 3.55's, an automatic, and a class 3 frame hitch, go rent the trailer and do it. You may wind up a bit over, but it will tow fine. As I said, keep the speed down and lock out the overdrive.
This is what I tow.
Around 6100 with full gas tanks.

97 SC 4X4 4.6 3.55 LS
Gibson Swept side exhaust, F250/350 SD Trans cooler.
Lock out O/D for sure. I was able to make 70 mph on the flat.
Don't expect to get up to highway speed very fast, and don;t be surprised to see mpg in the 6-9 range.
