Wiring an aftermarket tach
Wiring an aftermarket tach
I have an Autometer tach that shows a single wire to the positive side of a single ignition coil as a trigger signal. I have COPs on my 02 5.4L. What can I do to get the tach to work?

Hey.
Y'all may need to contact Autometer ...

ok, i just did this install myself today and i have my tachometer working finally. my tach came with 3 wires red, black, and green. red is for power, black is for ground, and green is for signal. i just hooked my red wire to my fog lights so its on a switch (both the tach and the fog lights) so now i don't have to worry about my battery being drained.
the ground is easy, find a place under the dash with some exposed metal (no finish aka paint). if there is paint just scrape it away because you want good soild contact. the black wire can just be screwed right into that metal.
now the green wire is tricky and its gonna take some doing. the location to connect your green wire is under the hood on the passenger side behind your battery. to get there you will have to remove your battery, then remove the plastic cradle that your battery was sitting in (there should be 4 bolts that secure it in place) now to find the wiring. you'll prolly need a flashlight as i did. now look towards your firewall behind where your battery used to be and you will see a large wire connector with a bolt attaching it to your firewall. lossen the bolt and it will come apart. there will be many wires attached to this connector (104 if i remember right) btw this connector is called the PCM or powertrain control module. the wire you want is number 48 its white with a pink stripe. the connector has the wire numbers on it so can determine which is number 48. splice your green wire in and your all hooked up. might take an hour or so to do it.
