PATS won't go into program mode for fob

I purchased a 2002 F150 XLT, only came with one key and one fob, I purchased a second key and fob from ford dealer (OUCH). The guy at the counter gave me instructions to program the fob to save a few bucks. I followed the instructions, same as in the owners manual on off 8 times etc but can not get the locks to cycle to program the fobs. I have searched several forums with different ways to do it, ie; door open door closed seatbelt fastened seatbelt unfastened headlights on and off, kneel in the seat cough 3 times while turning the key and wiggling my ears (kidding) but still can not get it to go into program mode. anyone have any suggestions? reboot the PATS system maybe? if so how to?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ray

Pretty sure you can't do anything with only one key programed to the truck. Think the stealership has to program the other key before you can program anything.

Pats Technical Article if you haven't read it yet.

Thanks,
the instructions are very straight forward but reading forums all day I have heard some odd variations and tried them all, like most electronic equipment i thought a reboot mught do the trick but I don't know how and what the risks are such as losing the one fob I have that does work or wosre yet having a no starter.

I have no key problems. I have 2 working keys, now I want 2 working fobs (remotes) I have one that works but from what I understand you program both / all at the same time

I only have one fob myself so I don't know exactly. This thread reminds me, I need to find my other key.

In that tech article you linked to, section 4 is what I am trying to do but I can not get past the first step off/ on 8 times to go into program mode.

The remote entry system has nothing to do with the PATS system.

If the CSM won't go into program mode, there's likely to be some fault associated specifically with it or one of its input signals.

A couple of suggestions:

First make sure that you unlock the doors with the lock controls on the door not the key fob (Doors should be closed).

Second, following those instructions you really have to be quick when turning the key from on to off and back again 8 times in 10 seconds, make sure that the key is turned completely to the off and on positions when doing this and make sure that you end with the key in the on position. As a side note the key has to be turned 8 cycles (Key from on to off and back to on being one cycle), not just 8 times.

Third, this shouldn't make a difference (It didn't when I programmed my old and new remotes when i ordered replacements), but is the key an original key that came with the truck from the factory?

When I programed my remotes it took three of four times to get the truck into programming mode, I was not fast enough with turning the key 8 cycles.

Good luck!!

PROBLEM SOLVED!
I had all but given up since even the dealer could not get it to work (no charge) I moved on to another little problem, my overdrive switch did not work, checked the fuses and found a blown 5 amp fuse, replaced the fuse and overdrive switch works so just for the hell of it I did the on/off 8 times thing and Bingo the doors locked confirming program mode, programmed 2 remotes with no problem.

Re: PROBLEM SOLVED!

Thanks so much for this, rayjay. I, too, had a switch blown. Replaced it and then was finally able to program my fob. Dealership did not know what to do.
