2003 F-150 Supercrew
2003 F-150 Supercrew
I have a 2003 F-150 4x4 Supercrew with a 5.4L engine and 3.73 rear end. We are getting ready to buy a travel trailer. Rockwood 2702SS with a dry weight of 5400 LBS and a GVW of 6700 LBS. Does any one know if this is too much for this truck to pull. I am looking for thoughts and suggestions. Thanks Rob
I pulled a 5500lbs trailer with no problem with my truck from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe.
116 miles most of it up hill. It depends on tow package I.E. larger radiator. Add water when you get to where you're going to save weight.
I believe water is around 8 LBS per gallon so you could save 400 lbs pretty easy that way.

With the data you give, the truck should weigh a average of about 5600 lbs.
The trailer weight at 5400 with driver and a full tank of gas will be a gross combined weigh of 11,000 lbs +/-.
Your truck's GCWR should be in about 13,000 +/-.
13,000 - 11,000 would allow you extra weigh of about 2000 lbs for passengers and trailer loading to go to the limit.
Look at the sticker on the door jam to see the total gross loading you can have and figure from there.
I think you can do it but be sure before you buy and don't overload in the interest of safety.
Remember the trailer has propane, fresh water, food stuffs, cooking and cloths etc as extra loads plus your passengers in the truck all add to the Gross loading.
The 5.4 motor and 3.73 make up for a lot in the tow rateing.
Good luck.

You will exceed GVWR before you exceed GCWR.
The door sticker will give you GVWR. This is the maximum allowed loaded truck weight including tongue weight. If you are exceeding the limit, put all cargo that you can in the trailer - and watch the distribution so you don't have a tongue that's too light or too heavy.
You WILL need a weight distribution hitch and a brake controller.
