possible new engine
possible new engine
Hey there new to this forum.
Was hoping to get someother peoples persepctives on this. I have a 2002 F-150, 5.4 V8. I love this truck and its been good to me. Its been payed off now for a year, i've just crossed 170,000 miles. The truck has given me no trouble aside from shooting out sparks plugs. That is until last winter. Long story short is i have a head gasket that needs to be replaced, and my truck sometimes shakes and the code says that Cylinder 3 is miss firing. To get these repaired im not that far off what a new engine would cost. My truck in a fairly good condition and if it was running better i wouldnt have any inclination to sell it. Im trying to save for a house so not having a truck payment is awesome, but i need relieable transportation. My question is this, is a new engine worth it? for a truck with that many miles on it is it a waste? how does this affect the resale value? is this the course you would go? etc. any thought or help would be appreciated.

You can find low mileage engines for around 1200. But, as far as your HG cost, you must be referring to a shop doing the repair. If that is the case, I'll assume you would have someone do the swap for you. If so, could run you around 800-1200 for labor costs.. I say find a low mileage engine and do the swap yourself with a friend. I did it in around 14 hours with a friend and that included cleaning of a lot of parts, swapping of parts and new parts.
I have a 98 with a 4.6L and I had the same dilemma.
I ended out buying a reamnufactured engine, had it shipped to my Bro-in-law and he swapped it out for me. All together I paid about 3,000 for everything and got a $500 core charge back when I returned the old block. Have out another 30,00 miles on her since and she is running great. the new engine came with a 100,000 mile warranty. I did also have the Cylinder 3 issue and that turned out to be the heater hose at the firewall was leaking on the #3 plug causing it to foul every so often. I put four hose clamps on it and it still leaks a little but not as bad. It actually broke the #3 plug at the percelin part.
