Transfer Case Hard to Shift

Have a 98 F150 4WD w/ autolock hubs, when I put it in 4X4 It is very hard to move the shifter. My question is are the transfer cases sealed units or can the oil be changed in them?

They have transmission oil in them and yes it can and should be changed.

That's not why the lever is stiff. Get under there with some PB Blaster and spray down the linkage.
