5.4 Oil Filter Change: How to avoid making a mess?

2003, 5.4, 4x4.

When I change the oil filter, oil leaks down all over the front axle and other places. Is there a trick to somehow draining the filter before unscrewing it?

I use Amsoil filters if that makes any difference.

Thx!

I've not looked, but I bet they make a filter relocation kit. Not sure if that is recommended or even available.

There's usually a plastic piece that routes the oil when you remove the filter. If you take your time and un twist is and then move the open side up and keep it that way a lot wont be spilled. That's what I do.

I doubt there is a much easier way or better way. Not much room up there.

When I do mine, I take a Gallon size ziploc bag and hold it open under the filter, so as I'm unscrewing it oil doesn't go everywhere.

Exactly, that looks like an extremely vulnerable place to put it.

For the Haters Society.

You guys must be jealous, -have to be. Or just stupid. (?) Which is it, both ?

That's Fords Remote kit. Truck has 279,000 miles on it. It's worked most it's life, spent allot of time on the trails, thru the woods.

It has NEVER leaked. If they leak, your doing something else wrong. The system uses hydraulic lines that spec over and above 300% of what this system calls for.

Vulnerable ? Nope! If you new what your were looking at structurally, you would notice that it sits back, far enough on the frame. You would have to nail something pretty damn hard to get to it.

I know what Pirates talking about, - I had a 2001 that you had to crank the wheels to one side to get it out. Made a mess, hated it.

User Galaxy has a nice alternative system as well, (in his gallery). I change the oil often and this makes it a little more enjoyable.

Not hating, and it wasn't frontal impact I was worried about, it's anything in the wheelwell essentially.

Looks are deceiving when he has half the front end off the truck! It hides very nicely up behind the valance.

There are no downsides to a remote filter, besides cost. You're worried about the filter being in a vulnerable spot...what's vulnerable about it? Vulnerable to what?? Here's mine...

https://www.f150online.com/forums/v8...look-like.html

All stainless braided hoses and AN fittings...I guarantee you there'll be no leaking or damage to these. And frontal (or any angle) impact??? WHATEVER. If I hit something, or get hit hard enough to damage this filter, most likely not driving the truck away anyways.

Have had this exact same set-up on three different trucks (two of mine and did my dads truck) with probably a combined mileage of 350,000 miles. Guess what?? Never a leak, never any damage from ANYTHING.

Disregard the Mobil 1 filter in the photo's. Because of this mount, I can now run a HUGE Amsoil EaO26.

But yea...you can go this route or deal with the mess. kudos' for using an Amsoil filter though...they're awesome.

You have acreage of space between your tire and the filter location. My wheel well is crammed full of wheel and tire, so what's a foot away on your truck is much tighter on mine.

Not sure if the 4.6 come with the filter relocated to that position like the aftermarket relocation kit for hte 5.4, but when I had my 4.6 it leaked too. It slowly leaked where the hydralic line went into the metal fitting.

I will say it made oil changes about 100% easier and cleaner.
I hate changing the oil filter on my 5.4 due to the location of the filter.

Depending on the cost I would look into the relocation kit if you really want it.

Im not hating it......as an observation I just see alot of original oem remote oil filters leak at the hose connections.....now this kit sounds alot better than what ford originally put in the early f150s........Jeez don't get all butt hurt bud.....

I'm not hurt, I'm gonna support the facts regardless. If they leak, it's usually at the O-ring and not the line itself. It's only going to leak down there if the oil was never changed, engine over heated or over filling the crank case constantly. You would be surprised how much abuse it takes for these trucks to leak any fluids (coolant excluded lol).

Not since that Ford engineer over @ tccoa announced the gasket upgrade. The upgrade was to handle somewhat raw synthetics back then (97/98). Synthetics became allot more versatile since that time, - the gaskets, o rings and seals remain tough as ever.

Yea, my butt is alright. I think ?
