good system cleaner?
Hey,
Anyone know of a good fuel systems cleaner?
all around looking to clean up everything, doing a full tune up,
would like something that will clean Injectors, carbon build up,
everything. also, should i do the cleaner then new plugs ect.. or just do it all at once.. I was thinking do it together an then I got to thinking, with all that crap burning off ect.. isn't really a big deal would it be?
anyone with real time results on this?
I read something about someone saying they did such an such an used such an such and checked the before an after with bore scope, but its been awhile since I read that.

I use Lucas fuel injector cleaner. It's for both diesel and gas engines. The big trucker guys I know put it into every tank and swear by it. I use it on a regular basis in both of my V8 fords, probably every other tank. Both trucks run great and I've never had an injector or fuel pump issue.
Cost around 9 to 12 bucks a quart. If I remember right u add 2.5oz for every 10 gallons. So a 64oz quart will last awhile.

Concentrated Techron or Gumout with regain are the only really proven fuel system cleaners most of the others are snake oil. If you always use fuel with techron it keeps carbon build up to a minimum and keeps the fuel system clean.
Seafoam is great when run through the intake system by vacum hoses. Just becareful because you'll need to change your plugs after using seafoam. Also if you go that route, do it somewhere outside a neighborhood as everyone will think your house/apartment is on fire. You dont want the fire department showing up. That stuff really cleans things out and creates as lot of smoke buring of the deposits etc.....I've never ran it just through the fuel tank, but it does reallllly well having the vacum tube suck it out bottle.
As for fuel additative for cleaning injectors, everything I've ever read all says it's basically a waste of money.
Since I've seen what seafoam does to the intake side, I would assume it does the same when adding it to the fuel system. I would go the seafoam way if it was me.

Stay away from the seafoam junk.....its kerosene, paint thinner and naphtha .....it ain't worth it........change your plugs and your oil if you use it.....

x2! Seafoam fouled my plugs and last time I did any sort of regular fuel additive, it clogged my catalytic converters. The only thing I use is Shell/BP gasoline with a constant WOT run from time to time to help burn off carbon buildup.

Countless number of cars, truck, and motorcycles over the years...the highest with 220,000, and currenlty two '02 vehicles with 120,000 each and I have never used a fuel system cleaner or addative of any type. Never had a fuel system problem.
Fuel injectors are super easy to pull..pull one out and see if it looks like there's any carbon build up or anything indicating a problem on it.

Based on my personal experience, I use shell gasoline for the most part and change fuel filter every 15k miles. I run some of the Amsoil PI cleaner though every now and then-(5k) Thats what i use to clean the fuel system. I've tried some of the others (Techron, Lucas) maybe the lucas quieted the injectors a bit-or maybe it was my imagination.
Recently I pulled the upper intake due to a failing intake manifold gasket and was surprised at the cleanliness of the intake valves and cylinder head intakes. The engine has 150k on it, and the intake valves had ZERO buildup and looked like they had just been put in! There was a bit of carbon buildup in the upper intake manifold from the EGR/Oil mixture of the PCV and such. But anything in the spray path of the injectors was shiny and new looking. injectors looked in great shape as well.
As long as you're in there for a tune up, I would perform and upper intake manifold cleaning while you are up there. Especially around the EGR/throttle body ports- there is a write up here somewhere, maybe in the tech articles. I cleaned mine all up and noticed a better idle on the engine.

There is NOTHING good in doing this.

Proper way is to preform a Motor Vac Service or BG Service @ the dealership.
It's called the skinny pedal. Put your foot into it. Works like a charm. I just got another free car (another project) that had not been started in over 5 years. Jumped in and gave it the old Ukrainian tune up with a few gallons of fresh gas. Runs like a top (pulls harder than my truck too).
