clunk in front bakes

Hi guys, I just did front pads and rotors on 1998 F-150 supercab 4x4, the truck stops smooth and straight, but when you backup you get a clunk, and when you put it back in drive and stop you get another clunk, and it will be fine for forward braking until you backup and stop, then it repeats back and forth. anybody know what i should be looking for? I greased the slides and put brake quiet on back of the pads and washed all the parts with brake kleen when i was done. Thanks for any help.

Check the u-joints and have you looked at your e-brake lately? you have to remove the rear caliper and rotar to look at it..

Exactly where does the clunk sound like it's coming from?

Are you sure you put everything back in - like shims and clips? It's usually a good idea to put a new hardware kit in when you do disc brakes. Something is loose that shouldn't be.

they are the original clips but they are in good shape and the pads seemed to be tight when i put them in, it does not have shims. i would go out and check the bolts to make sure there tight, but its raining over here on the east coast. ( no garage )

The ball joints were good before the brake job, but i had to hit the rotor with a 5 lb hammer a couple of hundred times before it came loose. do you think the vibration of hitting the rotor could have made the ball joint loose?

Check tie rods too! While you're at it anyways.

I can't remember the name of the damn thing but I had bolts come loose on the caliber mounting bracket. I believe they were 19mm. Everytime I hit a bump you could here a clack sound. Check those just for GP

Get the front disc hardware kit at autozone and pull the calipers and install it. Less then $10

Hi every one! UPDATE ON CLUNKING NOISE IN FRONT BRAKES. well it stop raining and i jacked up the truck and took off the wheel and the two 18mm caliper bracket mounting bolts were a tad loose, i tightened the bolts about 1/8 of an inch and "Bingo" the noise went away. you would be surprised the it made so much noise just from 1/8 inch. I want to thank every one for all your help. Thanks BOB
