Wheel Stud Sizes
I ran into an annoying problem today when putting a set of aftermarket wheels on my new-to-me 2000 F-150. I was running the wheels on my 1997 Expedition and had the appropriate conical seat lug nuts and locks. I went to use the same nuts on the F-150 only to discover that they wouldn't fit. The Expedition uses 12mm x 1.75 RH nuts. Turns out the F-150 uses 14mm x 2.0 RH lug nuts. Is this a year-to-year difference or an F-150/Expedition difference or even a 2WD/4WD difference? Hopefully I can find a place in town tomorrow that stocks a set of the F-150 lug nuts. They seem like they might be a more common size (I had to special order the Expedition's locks).
The reason for the change from 12mm to 14mm stud was for strength. The 2000 year model seen a major suspension upgrade. With curb weight staying the same 3923-4806 except 1In 99 the f150 had a max payload capacity of 2127 and max tow capacity of 5000. In 2000 Ford did away with the light duty f250 making the f250 the top 8500gvw truck. With this came the introduction of the f150 7700gvw class. It came with a heavier frame, larger brakes with a payload capacity of 2385 and a max tow capacity of 8800. The suspension upgrade was a crossed the board in the f150 with the regular cab 4x2 f150 having a tow capacity of 8500. The beefed up suspension was also Ford getting ready for the introduction of the super crew f150 in 01
