How to wire up Hella horns

Hey guys, just got my 2 hella horns in the mail. They came with a relay. Do you guys recommend installing it with the relay? What difference does it make?

I noticed that it's a 30A relay and the stock fuse for the horn is a 20A mini-fuse. Can I just swap in a 30A mini fuse and use the relay?

Any advice for wiring these things up?

Are you wiring these in place of your factory horns?

Yes you will need the relay. Its what tells the horns to cut on and off, it acts as a big switch basically without you actually needing to switch it.

yeah i'm using these horns in place of the factory horns, and using the stock wiring for it too.

Really if it was me doing it I would just pull the factory horns put the hellas in the place and hook them up, test it, if it works go with it and don't even worry about touching the factory wiring. Otherwise then you'll need to switch in the new relay and fuse.

Two items here.
1. Do the new horns draw more current?
If yes, is it more than the stock circuit is wired for?
If no, just replace the horns.
2. Relay: the use of a relay so the horn switch only handles the low current of the relay winding and not the full current of the horns. Makes a dfference on switch or steering wheel switch life.
Good luck.

Does the truck have a stock relay on the horn circuit to begin with?

So I just went for it and got them wired up and installed, and they work great. I like the tone overall. Better than the Wolo Bad Boy for sure.

I didn't use the relay for now, I just wired them as the stockers were - just a direct replacement. I will probably just stay with this set-up for now unless someone can confirm that using the 30A relay with the kit actually makes them louder.

Relay don't affect loudness, the just control how much load goes to the switch.

ok thanks guys. the only reason i wondered is because the stock fuse is 20 amps and the relay says it's 30 amps, so i considered that maybe with the relay installed the horns would receive another 10 amps over stock. i guess not. either way, i'm really happy with them!
