So how bad did I mess up. (Won't start)

So how bad did I mess up. (Won't start)

Okay, so today I decided I would start trying to hookup the wiring that I need to power my new heated/power seats.

I identified the power wire in the main harness for the power seats and the main wire for the heated seats. So the only thing left was a wire from the ignition to power a relay for the heated seats so they would only get power when the ignition was on. Found the wire matching the factory wire schematic (white with light blue strip) and it did only have power when the ignition was on.

Created a test harness to test the relay on the bench just to make sure I knew which wire went where on the harness and that worked okay. So I hooked the relay to the truck. Turned the ignition to accessory and everything seemed to work okay with the test light. Had power with ignition on, had no power when ignition off. EVerything looked good. So cleaned everything up and was about to call it a day.

Decided at the last minute to take the truck for a ride and that is when the problems started showing up. Turned the key to crank and it was like I had a low battery and would not start. ABS light is going on and off and I can hear at least one relay under the hood going on and off with it. Same for the radio.

Immeditaly powered off, disconnected the relay that I hooked in and tried again. Same thing. Figured I would throw this write up out quickly then go disconnect the battery until I figure out what to do next. Everything I wired up I have now disconnected except for where I tapped into the wire for power on the ignition. I is just hanging there. Don't know if I cut the wire when I spliced it, or if I just fried something when I hooked into the harness or .....


Anybody have a good bet on what I screwed up????????

Nope, - so have you reversed everything you've done ? Did you disconnect the battery each time ?

Disconnected battery and used cutouts on individual circuits. I have pretty much backed everything out, still have the tap on the ignition wire, but it is not hooked to anything. I think tomorrow I will replace the segment of wire that I tapped into just in case I cut the wire somehow. I have the battery disconnected now, so it should reset. Will see if it works okay after the reset. The relay that I am using might have been too much of a draw on the circuit I tapped into causing a voltage drop.

If so I will run a wire from the fuse box to the relay instead of tapping into an existing circuit.

Still looking to see if anybody else has any ideas though.

not to make you sound dumb, but did you check the battery after you had symptoms of a weak battery?

jbrew, was not saying that I was not interested in what you had to say, I was just saying that I am planning to try a reset tomorrow, but was still open to any other ideas.

Patman03SprCrw, I did not run a seperate test on the battery, but other than not starting, none of the symptoms suggested a battery issue. It was running fine before I started messing with it. If a reset does not do it tomorrow, then I will try running a load test on the battery and see if it holds up.

maybe i read your post wrong then when you said that it was like a dead battery

Starter relay was clicking like you get when you have a weak battery. However, the relay was clicking strong. Was more worried about the ABS and other relays clicking on and off.

There is a 30 amp fuse that powers the heater modules in both seats that is hot at all times. If one or both of the the modules are defective they could draw down the battery. Each seat heater module has 9 wires. What did you do with them?

I did back everything out yesterday and got it running again. I think ultimately it was the battery. Don't know if something was hooked up wrong, or just leaving the doors open as long as I did drained it or a combination. Anyway feel pretty dumb now. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

That's what I was going to say. Leaving the doors open for a project thats an hour or two long will drain the battery. The clicking is the relays getting power, and losing it, then getting power, and losing it. IE dead battery.
