Arrow Not sure how to feel...

Ok so i've had my 99 XLT for a little over a month now.. and i really have no complaints... i'm just in love with it

but... i got totally screwed over by the people i bought it from...
we paid 4000 for it, it had 227k on it.. rebuilt trans dec 09 and we were promised that the brakes and rotors were replaced last year and were just fine... it came with 22"rims and tires worth about 1700 new, a 6" navi system, 8k HIDs, Smoked Altezza tails, and a SI/DO aftermarket exhaust that i still havent taken time to figure out what it actually is....
if you have any questions about why i had to get any of these parts, just ask haha...
in the 6 weeks ive had it....
Front brake pads+labor - 119.95
Front rotors - 195.26
Bearings+labor - 82.18
Front Wheel Seals - 12.40
255/70R16 Kenda Klever - 524.00
10 lug nuts - 34.80
2 wheel studs - 13.96
differential service with free labor - 36.00
2 license plate markers - 22.02
REBUILT TRANS+labor+fluid - 1227.00
rear main seal with free labor - 52.53
caliper bolt - 5.25
things i NEED to get done as soon as i get enough money:
Valve Cover Gaskets+labor - 312.61
fuel injection service +half labor - 29.95
full tune up including plugs and wires - 288.73

OK... so after all that, plus tax and little fees here and there (disposal fees and whatnot) it comes out to an awesome grand total of.....
3208.23 in 6 weeks...oh not to mention an oil change including oil/air/fuel filters because all 3 were clogged full of crap... the worst thing is 99% of these things are repairs.. not maintenance... and its bull... but... in the end... i still love my truck...

12 years old and 227k miles. Did you actually expect it to be flawless and problem free ?
Did you have a qualified mechanic look over the truck before you bought it or did you just take the previous owners word on it's mechanical condition ?
There is an old saying. Buyer Beware !
Gut instinct tells me that you were influanced into buying this truck because of the mods. You took a gamble and it came back to bite you in the ***.
It can easily happen to the best of us ! You still love your truck and now you have a much better understanding of it's true mechanical condition.
Drive it, enjoy it and be careful.

Daaaaammmmnnn. Thats alot to spend on a older truck. Could have saved ALOT by doing everything yourself. I have spent far more than that in the maintenance department though. You dont even want to know.. the oldest thing on my truck (parts wise) is my engine. Atleast this way, you wont have any suprises for a good long while. I like knowing that I will have a solid ride for the next few years with hopefully no worries. I'd imagine I could part my truck out for double or triple what I could sell it for if anything ever happened though.

@mlamprey yes actually, my mechanic looked it over twice, we test drove it for 30 or 40 minutes, we looked at other trucks, i researched for hours on common problems and issues with them... i was in dire need of a vehicle.. we had looked at 5 or 6 other trucks in the past 2 months with no luck.. this was the best condition out of all of them, and sure the mods made me want it more, but im not stupid, my shop said the transmission lookd just fine and i had no problems, but obviously they cant look inside and see the gears.. we knew about the brakes and main seal and valve covers before we got it but i planned on selling the rims/tires to make up for it, i just havent sold them yet. so i knew for the most part was i was getting into, but the main problem that was unkown was the transmission..oh, and the kid that we bought it from was a 17 year old (censored) who has his mommy and daddy buy everything for him, i wasnt about to trust him on anything
@b2therad yeah i kinda know what you mean... i mean i just need to replace the pumps and alternator and pretty much everything will be less than 5 years old

While test driving you didn't notice anything with the trans? The tranny's in these your trucks don't just go out in a day. They usually slowly start to go.

actually it really did just go out, me and my dad test drove it, no slipping, never had any problems going in reverse or anything, and i was on my way home from work and my overdrive just stopped working and had to limp home... and i talked to my mechanic and they said USUALLY there are signs, but sometimes it will literally just go out and they gave me a couple examples of people having it happen.

You probably ran it low on oil and over heated it.

when my shop took apart the transmission to rebuild it, they said that when it was "rebuilt" 14 months ago, they literally only replaced 2 gears but charged them for everything including a torq converter

So you chose to have it rebuilt again by the Same shop who did it the 1st time and openly admitted to screwing over the previous owner.
It sounds like your doing business with a Real reputable shop, I hope in your case they did the job right this time.

Smooth Move Ex-lax! It sounds like your doing business with a Real reputable shop, I hope in your case they did the job right this time.
I don't think that is near what he meant. He said..... when HIS shop opened up the transmission ( then they can obviously tell what WAS replaced, what wasn't.) Maybe he has a receipt left from previous owner that had the charges on it. Just my take on it. However... if he did take it back to the same shop.... shame on him

Yes, you could be correct, that may well be what he meant.
