Clicking noise on acceleration
Clicking noise on acceleration
Hi guys, need some help here. I have recently noticed an initial click when i go to accelerate in my 2000 f150. I have the 4r100 trans if that makes any difference. From listening with the door open the clicking sounded like it may have been the front u joint in the rear drive shaft.
I went to replace the u joint and it didnt seem to be the problem. I then had a buddy keep hitting the gas to make the click sound and I just cant seem to pinpoint the problem. It sounds like its coming from the right side somewhere around the transmission. I did find that my lower bushing is worn completely out on my right front shock but it doesnt seem to be the noise.
Is anyone familiar with this? To be as clear as possible...from a dead stop at initial acceleration it clicks or "pops" one time and doesnt do it again until I let off the gas and hit the gas once again. It sounds almost like it could be play in a u joint but like I said it doesnt seem to be coming from any of them and also with the front drive shaft being on the left side and the sound seeming to be from the right, I conclude it's probably not one of the u joints there. I also considered a motor mount, something internal in the transmission, or a cv joint problem possibly on the right front. Please Help!!!
Thanks a lot

I believe there was a TSB on the output shaft of the trans making a clicking noise
Search the TSB's
Otherwise suspect the u joints
If you have a LS rear differential and the fluid has not been changed... wouldnt hurt to change it and make sure it has the proper friction modifier

found this... seems to fit, i'll have to see tomorrow if it's only in first gear or not.

SOME VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 4R70W AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MAY EXHIBIT A TICKING OR CLICKING TYPE NOISE IN FIRST GEAR. *TT
Then i found this...

How important, if it is the anti rattle clip, to get this fixed? Just spent $$$ on an intake manifold gasket to fix a coolant leak into the exhaust. Kind of tapped out.

There is a low probability it is part of that tsb. I found the tsb I was thnking of. Not sure if it is your problem as it describes it as a clunk at take off, not a clicking noise. I would inspect your u joints.

This condition may be caused by the slip yoke not sliding smoothly on the output shaft splines. "
The remedy was greasing the splines.
I would go ahead and replace the rear differential fluid for good measure and maintenance. Inspect your U joints and replace if they are in question. That is the first place to look. If that does not cure it, inspect your rear brakes to make sure they are not hanging, including your e brake. From there, maybe follow the tsb and grease the output shaft.
Do you get a clunk going from Park to Drive, Drive to Reverse, or vise verse?
