how does air ride work

i had my truck on the lift today and i looked at the air bags to see how they would work and to answer my question about if they are after market or stock. my question got answered they are after market due to there are two lines one per bag. you inflate them with a air hose go to the rear of the truck and adjust accordingly my question is how many pounds should each bag have in them right now i have 20 lbs per bag.

Is your setup a towing application or lowered suspension? Do you not have an onboard compressor running to the bags?

I've juice mine to 50 lbs for hauling in past but was told never to let go below 10lbs.
