Keyless Entry Opinions and Advice

I have a 1999 F150 that does NOT have keyless entry. I have to use my key every time I unlock the door and it is wearing the lock on the driver's side badly. I use a new key I made about a year ago to unlock the door. Periodically, the key will not engage the lock and I have to unlock the passenger side door and press the unlock button to open it. I assume the lock is worn down.

My question is what would you recommend as a fix? Would it be wise to get the locks fixed at the Ford dealership, or would buying keyless entry for the truck suffice? If you recommend keyless entry, what brand? Distributor? Expectable price? Where to get it installed?

Thanks guys, appreciate any help.

It's not that hard to change just the lock cylinder. Don't pay a Dealer for what you could do yourself

I have a this similar problem with my 99 Ford. I haven't bought anything yet, but i've been looking into getting a keyless entry as well, but something that runs the locks and all of that. From what I have read so far, most kits will work. I have been looking on Amazon, a good Bulldog kit will cost about 113, or alittle more. Depends on how advanced you want your remote to look. A guy I work with just put a bulldog kit on his F-250. Easy install, works very well. I'd say its a good brand.

Bulldog = garbage.

To the OP, do you have power locks?

If not, you will have to add actuators in order to add keyless entry.

Yea, I have power locks. I called the ford dealership recently to ask them if the truck originally came with keyless entry. The rep. told me to turn the key in the ignition from rest to all power (without cranking) 10 times rapidly in under 10 sec. He said if the truck originally came with keyless entry then the locks would have locked and unlocked repeatedly several times after the ignition trick, which they did not.

So, what do you recommend? I'm willing to put money forward for a decent system. At the same time, I don't want to go crazy. Just something that will lock and unlock the truck for me. If there is a system anyone knows of that is reasonably priced WITH an alarm system, that would be nice as well.

^^Kind of a thread jack man. Would you mind posting your problem in a new thread and deleting this post? You could always PM one of these guys or write on their wall too. I'm just trying to keep the thread on topic to get the lock issue worked out.

You had said that your driver side lock is wearing out, hence the lock cylinder in the door is a relatively easy fix. If you think it is your power actuators, they are a little more tricky but still do-able. The thing with actuators is getting all the lock rods where they need to be.

My passenger side does not fully unlock and I think the actuator needs fixed/replaced... just hasn't been a priority yet

Ah, I see. I'm pretty sure it is just the lock cylinder itself then. I'm having window troubles as well, mainly on the passenger side. Looks like I'll just wait until I can knock out both while I have the doors torn apart...

Thanks for the links, I didn't really consider BestBuy so far, I don't really know why though. Can you give me an example of additional parts and labor? What does that entrail?

These trucks have goofy door locks. Usually its the remote starts that require the extra parts and labor (immobilizer bypass). The worst you should be looking at is a couple of relays.
