Slide it off the hangers. Use a pair of channel locks, grab the rubber with the shorter end of the jaws and the nipple at the other then squeeze. It will slide off. Reason why channel locks work better than standard pliers is because of the shape of the neck and jaws. I removed them all the time with ease that way. Just did an exhaust setup on a vr6 jetta last weekend. I've always used that method and it never fails. I have had my whole exhaust system off my truck (99 5.4L) many times.

Oh wait, maybe your not referring to removing it from the hangers. You might be talking about where the sleeve in front of the muffler is. Since it has been crimped for so long, its a PITA to remove. One time I welded a big not on both sides of it so I could alternate sides with blows from a hammer to get it to slide off. Otherwise, cut it... Or make a relief cut at an angle so it allows it to open up a bit, then bang it off.

I would try to smack it around a bit first, try to hit it on the edges without damaging them to remove it.

If you got it to wiggle, that's a good start. Put some heat to it if you can. Use a piece of 2x4 and beat the crap out of it. As stated above, the crimped area is what's gonna hold you back.

you can also get a flat blade screw driver in under there and hit it with a hammer and try to uncrimp it. ive done this many times but yeah i normaly get a slegde hammer and hit the muffler till it pops off.
