Sticking in OD? ('03 5.4L FX4)

Truck has 117K on it. I've only had it for a few months & since I got it this has happened 3 times. It feels like it's sticking in OD. When I'm at a cruising speed and slow down, then try to speed back up it lugs, just like a manual trans would if you left it in 4th or 5th and didnt down shift before trying to speed back up. When it happened I let of the gas, put my foot back in it a little & she shook a bit then down shifted & was fine...

The trans fluid appeared to be nice and clean when I checked it after purchasing the truck, so I dont think the issue would be resolved with a flush, however I could be wrong.

We had an early 90's model car that did the same thing when I was younger, just had to change out the little computer that tells the trans when to shift...

Think that could be my problem?

Thanks, JD (PS I did a little search and could only come up with something similar for an 04, but the cause was faulty parts in the trans, so I dont think that applies here)

That, or could be some sort of tc issue? If you post up in the transmission section you will probably get some more detailed advice than over here.

I think you have a lowgrade misfire.....
You described it perfectly really. That shutter and no shift response out of OD with a bit of bucking is a low grade misfire. There is however, what I have found to be common on all 3 of the F series I've owned, a bit of a sluggish area as you have described. Once it is in over drive at speeds about 45-50... if you let off and slow down to about 40-42 and eeaase into the pedal, it would lug a bit before it shifts out of over drive. I have found that instead of easing into it and waiting for the pcm or whatever to decide to shift out, rather giving it a quick tap (not full throttle) just a quick tap and it shifts out smooth with no void. But I believe what you are describing is a low grade misfire.

Thats about the exact speed it happens at every time. The limit on the road away from work is 45 so I'm usually going ~50 and had to slow down for someone turning yesterday when it happened...

Exact same scenario and speed as the first time it happened.

I dont think it's a miss-fire, my 97 use to miss-fire a good bit on me and this is different.
