Question
Okay, this may sound weird but:
Can a V8 to V6 swap be done in a 1998 XLT?
I have the Triton 5.4 (barely 67,000 miles) but with gas prices and my need to NOT need a V8 I was wondering if it would be advisable to trade someone with a low milage V6...Thanks in advance. And ALL statemenat are welcome. UF

I own a 4.2, and drive a 5.4 at work ... there's not a lot of difference in mileage between the two. It takes fuel to move a heavy truck, it doesn't matter all that much how many cylinders you're running the fuel through.
Yeah for the hassle the reduced value and the cost of doing such a swap one could buy quite a bit of gas. Keep the 5.4 you have running at its peak performance and all and its not that much worse then the 4.2. If you really want the few mile per gallon (maybe 2) sell your truck and find one with a 4.2 already in it.
I got a friend with a 4.2, and he doesnt do much better than me, if any at all. Keep the V8, and if you are really hurting for something gas friendly, go buy a beater honda civic or something for your commuting fun.

I agree with glc and bansheeman6100, Ive thought about that for a long time! back to your question, My work has 5- 4.6L and 3- 5.4L and they all get almost exactly the same mileage, the only real difference is when I drive a 4.6 it feels like driving a 5,000lb truck with a Focus 2.0 engine!! (very guttless)
if you want better milage buy the focus!!!...

MAYBE I'll do what you did to yours to get better...
SERIOUSLY--> thanks ya'll for the insight... Looks like I will just keep it in and do some mods to get better mileage.
