can overfilling gas tank cause po171?

The other day i was filling my truck with gas while it was running and the nozzle didn't kick off like it should of, it didn't overflow it but it was really close. When it overfilled my truck it started to run rough for a few seconds and sounded like it wanted to die, after that it ran fine and i drove it a mile back home and the next day i started it to let it run a little bit in the morn before work and hten i noticed cel on PO171. I cleared code and truck seems to run fine. The week before i had a cyl 7 misfire and i put a new plug and coil pack on. I have 142k and truck has new plugs. any idea's? Thanks

You shouldn't put gas in with the engine running. It can screw up the evap system.

I had a similar thing before heading out with the travel trailer. I topped the tank off to the top of the filler neck with a gas can. (Engine off) After a short distance, at a stop, it ran really ragged until I got underway. It did not seem to be dropping the same cylinder, more like running too rich. It's never happened again and I don't top off like that anymore. No codes were thrown. Coincidence? Who knows? '98 5.4 Supercab had about 60,000 miles back then.

The valve itself won't cause that code, it's the plumbing going to it.

depending on how tight the OBD Evap system testing is, running the car with the gas cap off (filling or not) can cause lean issues.

Yea, impossible, unless you had a hole in it lol. Otherwise, just a reset can cause it to disappear, -that can happen allot. You may have had a leak at the valve connection. The valve itself wouldn't cause it.
