Fuel pump is supposedly bad HELP !!!

Went to apply for a job yesterday and after i got done, came out and truck would turn over fine, but not crank. Battery fine, like new, but seemed like it wasn't getting fuel. Had it towed to shop. They are telling me the fuel pump is bad and normal price is about 1,200 bucks, and their willing to help me out because of my position and do it for about 800. Is this a fair price ? Also, how much trouble is it to do this ? I can't afford this and any help would be greatly appreciated. Looked in how to's and couldn't find anything. Could someone show me a link on how to replace and step by step instructions please. Thanks, i can't believe my luck.

that's a lotta money.

i'm assuming it's a oem pump they're including too but that's still a lotta cash.

how many hours are they saying to it takes?

i just put a lightning fuel pump in my screw last week and it took me 4 hours and that's because i'm a noob. the hard part was getting those hoses off the fittings. they're so tight. I had to drop the tank. if you have a regular cab or supercab i read people take off the bed instead and go from the top. that would indeed have more access.

When I did some searching I couldn't find exact step by step but you would drop the tank by using a floorjack or 2. the straps are held with bolts towards the driveshaft. there's 2 fuel lines you need to disconnect by using 3/8 fuel line tool,1 harness towards the rear you disconnect & vacuum hose next to it, fuel filler hose and 1 smaller 1 next to it, then vacuum hose towards the front.

Drop the tank and disconnect the harness then unbolt the small bolts that hold the pump and replace. If you think you're ever going to modify your motor with boost then you may as well upgrade the pump.

i forgot to mention to disconnect your battery 1st.

i would also check to be the fuse hadn't blown or the fuel cutoff reset button isn't triggered at the kick panel before paying for any services or doing it yourself.

You can test the fuel pressure to be sure its the pump. 1200 is the worst rip off I have heard of in a while, even 800. Theyll have it done in 2 hours.

The pumps are under 100 bucks. Drop the tank and do it yourself.

Thanks guys, going to tow it home and do it myself. It may take me twice as long as a mechanic but whatever it takes. I thought about cutting a hole in bed to give easy access, but not. Yeah autozone has fuel pump for bout 100 bucks.

Normal price from the dealership is $800. $853 to be exact lol. That's the AVERAGE price. You can do it yourself under $200 including new pump.

What is funny about the last Ford fuel pump I did is that they want the electrical connections soldered. I did not like that much heat around the fuel tank after just removing the old fuel pump. I don't remember all the details but thats what I remember. If you have some friends to help lift the bed its probly easy that way. Droping the tank is not fun, just don't forget to disconnect all the lighting wires to the taillights and tag light. Good Luck...

Yea, dropping the tank is 10 times easier and faster if you've done it before. Lifting the bed blows, - plus you'll snap the body bolts most likely. The tank bolts don't break.

Thanks jbrew, your always there with good info and i for one appreciate it. Gonna have to just drop the tank. No way i'm paying that kind of money, plus i like learning, even if it's the hard way.

Yea, a big part of that price is what Ford Dealerships charge for the pump. Between $300-$400. Seriously.

Let's see - 55 bucks plus tax, huh? An aftermarket Airtex pump is $58.79 plus shipping at rockauto.com.

Thanks, just checked that site. The one that is 58.00 is in seperate pieces. I take it that the one on my truck, the base or frame whatever you call it, can be reused and you just replace the parts shown in the picture of parts. And is the strainer included, couldn't tell in that pic. I don't have soldering tool or likewise, just basic tools, ratchet, ext's, sockets, screwdrivers and so on.

Yea, my first one went @ 90,000 miles. So purchasing that one would be taking a chance, it may work just fine and for along time if you replace the strainer or sock.. I think Global automotive sells pumps. Not sure what they charge. But, my second pump came from Ford and has almost 200,000 miles on it. I service it tho.

thanks jbrew, still wondering about the 58.00 pump deal, looks like a kit of parts to rebuild your existing pump, am i wrong on this. All the parts places have this for about 58.00 , is it a rebuild kit and how much trouble do you think it would be.

It's not hard to replace just the pump (using a kit like the one shown in the link above) ... no special tools required

BTW, ebay has fuel pumps as low as $23 shipped. I have no idea of the quality ...
