odometer problem

First off new to the site reading a few post and thought I would join. I have a 97 f150 4.6 really no mods bone stock the odometer worked good with no issues untill a about 4 months ago it quit for a few days maybe a week and then after I filled up and reset the trip it would start working again but now no matter what I do will not hardly move mabe after 2 or 3 tanks of gas might go 2 miles if that. Anyone know of a fix for this other that pay 500 for the dealer to replace the cluster also if anyone has a fix some details like some of the other post would be great. Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

500 dollars for a new cluster? why would u pay that? I got one for my gf's buick century from a junk yard for 80 bucks. NEVER use the dealer. Find a used cluster and get a mechanic to install, you'd be around 150 dollars

first off the ODO in the 97-98 is not computer controlled so a cluster swap would only cost about 80 depending on the availability of a used cluster near you. i swapped mine from the xl (no tach) to one with a tach and it only cost me the part and then rolling it to my mileage (not gonna sell the truck)

might be a loose connector on the back or a bad lead. you can use the cluster color swap how-to to remove it and check the back of the cluster

There were issues with soldering joints on the back of our odometers, causing it to intermittently turn off. There is a write up somewhere around here on how to fix it. It has happened to both the F150's I have owned, but never fixed either one.

The 97's have mechanical Odometers, to the fix link doesn't apply.

It's probably stripped plastic gears inside the Odo if the the speedo still works.

You could probably take it to a shop that does speedo repairs to get it fixed.
Be aware that if you fix it yourself or swap the speedo there could be issues with your DMV.

The good news is that 97 does not have PATS, so you can just swap the cluster with no problems other than the previously mention DMV issues.....

There are vendors on the internet that sell the gears to fix it if you're inclined to go that route.
