Rear Locking Differential?

I have a 1997 F150 xlt 2wd 4.6. I want to install a rear locking diff, but i don't really know much more. What brand should i get and how much money am i looking at? How hard to install, or should pay to have installed?
Thanks

If you don't already know whats involved then you can't do it yourself. Price of the diff will be ~$300+ depending on what you buy, install will be $500+. Its mostly only feasible to do if your changing gear ratio anyway.

What is your idea of a locking differencial?
If you mean the standard traction lock, then a stock limited slip carrier will go in in place of the open carrier.
It would involve setting side clearence to the pinion and the proper bearing tension fit.
This involves adjusting shim packs on each side of the carrier.
Note, these rears donot use a complete removable center section.
Everything is mounted inside the axle housing and is accessed by removing the rear cover. and pulling the axles back far enough to get the carrier out once the hardware has been removed.
Good luck.

install for the carrier itself isnt much its lining up the ring and pinion after that gets you.

when i changed out my rear it ran 832 with gears install kits and install and that was with a new carrier.

the locker itself if it isnt a LS is gonna be 700+, trutracs and air/elockers are in the 900 range

check this link and call if you really want to do it hes very helpful

Why not just get a good LS, my locker blows off road. I liked my truck more with a LS when I do go off road. The LS held me straighter. Now on road, I love the locker. Except when it tries to lock going around a corner.
