break issues

ok so i was comming home a couple of days ago and went over a bridge and heard a pop. i just assumed that is was the trailer i was pulling going over the seem in the bridge. well a couple of miles down the road i had to stop at a stop sign and i could bearly push the pedal down untill i got completely stopped and then the pedal went back to feeling like normal. when it did this it also felt like the abs was working and preventing the wheels from locking up. my front breaks have been warped for quite some time so i decided to replace everything (thinking the problem had finally become worse). so i changed pads, rotors (which were seized on pretty good) and the calipers. i didnt replace the flex lines because i dont have line wrenches and i didn't want to tackle the 13 year old fittings with a pair of vise grips. after all of this the problem is still esentially the same. it feels like the truck is trying to lock up (or the computer thinks so) and pushes the pedal back and does that anoying abs thing until you stop completely and then the pedal goes back to normal.

any ideas? i dont have any warning lights, and i cant see anything wrong form just inspecting the break system. i did take the rear breaks apart and they seem to be fine. thanks for any info or help that you can provide.

hey buuudddyyy!

lucky you, i just had the SAME EXACT problem. unplug the big plug from the RABS module directly under the master cylinder. your ABS and Brake light will be on, but the problem will go away.

thanks i may try that. i had a similar issue with the ranger i had and i just pulled the abs fuse. i know this will get rid of the problem and i really dont care about loosing my abs system, but i still would like to know how to fix the problem correctly because i am considering trading of the ol 97 and i want it to be in good working order. i may do this as a temporary fix so i can drive the truck, but if anyone knows what needs to be replaced or fixed im all ears. lol

id actually recommend doing this now, because you only have front brakes. the RABS isnt putting anything to the rear. at least in my case that is. it feels like theres brakes on all 4, but theres 100% braking to the front.

i believe the problem is that pump, but im not completley sure. i also noticed when i did my rear diff oil that the ring gear for the ABS sensor had several teeth sheared off. im curious as to whether or not that has something to do with it.

Are you referring to the "brakes" ? Or system breaks, - what part of the system breaks ?

i guess i ment brakes? lol sorry spelling has never been my strong point. the things on all 4 corners that make you stop moving hahaha.

last night i did pull the number 14 fuse from the under hood pannel (abs system) and the issue dissapeard, just like with my ranger. but the abs light is on. and i can lock them up now on gravel. my pedal feels 100 percent normal, and as long as i dont lock things up my stopping distance is back to normal (freaking awesome lol) before i pulled the fuse and after the issues started i noticed that under extreem circumstances, my braking distance was longer than it should have been. i cant tell if there is an issue with a pump or the porportioning valve or if there is something in the brakes that is catching and causing it to try to lock up (wich would make the abs system do its thing). and until i pulled the fuse, there were no warning ligths so there is nothing to plug in and get checked. id like to figure this out before snow flies because not having abs on ice is not fun lol.
