K&n ?
K&n ?
I just got my truck less than a month ago, I've already done several interior mods, but I'd like to do something in the bay. K&N seems like a good place to start, but before I tackle it, does anyone have any suggestions that are perhaps a better option? Any opinions on whether or not a K&N is a "mandatory" mod? What about just the filter vs an entire intake?
I have a 2000 SuperCab 5.4L 4x4...

The 'Gotts Mod' that many of us have done here... only costs $15.00 with basically the same result

Save your cash for another Mod

BTW- Someone just proved K&N's cause MAF issues, -even when properly oiled. Proved it online, - google it, I can't recall who it was now.
What kills me; - Your not suppose to dip the MAF in filter oil. So why in the hell would you test that ? They've toked on the tailpipe one to many times. It's the mist factor; ~ Oil, foreign matter and flow, thru product media.
I can't stand seeing their marketing hype anymore, - not since using their product for a couple years and seeing for myself. Yea, I've caught it on the MAF, but what wizzed me off most was the fricken sand and grit that got past their media.
I had a K&N drop in filter for about 7 years or so in my truck and never had any issues with it.. I did have to clean it out just about every time I changed my oil though. Country roads got that thing dirty pretty quickly. No big deal to clean it if you have their little clean up kit.. comes back like new every time. Now I have a procharger, and they use K&N filters on their kit.. no problems still. So where as you might hear some complaints from others, I have none to offer.

When it kills me I will come crawling back to ask for your filter expertise. So that you may guide me to the land of MAF contaminating, dirt absorbing, power destroying K&N filter oil freedom!!
Laugh now, that's really the least of it. I'm not talking about the MAF. Your going to need a Motor. That's just crazy. Your need to visit "Got pressure". It your motor man, it doesn't like sucking dirt!
Out of context, I know .... but..
As a... semi- intelligent mechanic ( made a living at it for 10 years)... I say, Open your mouth.... take a deeeeeep breath. Now.... INHALE with just a few grains of airbourne debris and some microscopic oil induced from the filter (Everytime you breathe).

There is no performance gains on a stock motor with K&N.
It's all hype.
There is now a washable filter available that does not need any oil.
I run one now.
For every one who runs a K&N looking for more performance or mileage, there is at least an equal number who can tell you they experienced no benifit.
The K&N may flow more air but uses a less fine filter structure to allow it but trys to make up for passing more dirt with oil to close the structure back down again trying to catch the fine particles.
The possible results plus the maintaince is not worth cost or effort.
Going further, a motor will flow only so much air in CFM at wide open throttle due to it's design.
When any filter begins to limit this max flow, power begins to drop.
A stock filter is more than adiquit on a stock motor plus some extra flow capacity by design for a resonable service interval before a change is needed.
At engine speeds under WOT, the throttle plate opening is the sole control of airflow.
The stock type filter is not at anywhere near offering a restriction at normal driving speeds unless left go so long it becomes a restriction stock or aftermarket type.
The same filter is speced for a 4.6 and 5.4.
On a 4.6, you would have even more airflow capacity/reserve than the same filter used on a 5.4L.

Wow, thanks for all the responses everyone. I'm glad I asked before I tackled the project.
I think I'll go with the GOTTS mod then. Does anyone dispute it's advantages? Any cautions when doing this mod?
Thanks again
