97 4.2 starting problem

I let my truck sit about a week and when I went to start it, it makes a grinding noise as it starts but runs perfectly after that. It does this everytime I start it whether its cold or hot. Is this starter or would it be something else?

In my opinion you will have to remove the starter and inspect it's gear drive and all the teeth on the converter plate's ring gear for damage or fault..
There is nothing to see on the outside unless the starter obviously has come loose from the bell housing.
Good luck.

I'm going to go ahead and replaced the starter. I've talked to a few people and they all agree thats what it most likely is

I'm not sure how a automotive starter differs from an airplane starter but usually a grinding noise when starting an airplane is the bendix not retracting from the flywheel or something to that nature

Yea I believe that is replaced when you replace the starter. I did replace the starter and it was obviously bad but the noise didn't go away completely. It's a lot quieter but it still has some grinding noise on startup. I guess when I get time I'll replace the flywheel
