Suspect bad torque converter
Suspect bad torque converter
Hi I am new to this forum but not working on Trucks/cars.
I have been searching around but have not found anyone with the same problem.
So…. When I role a stop sign (almost come to a stop) and start off again there is a obvious lag between the rpm’s going up and the truck moving forward. If I come to a complete stop I don’t notice this. Also when I am moving at speed and go into passing gear there is a lag and it is very ruff. It is a a lot like riding with someone who dose not know how to use a clutch. Also from months now there has been a noise like a tin can full of bb’s rattling around when you get about half way in to the throttle. I have had it in the shop for the last problems 3 times with now fix. The dealer said it might be a cat so I had them replaced.
Sorry for the long post but this is driving me nuts and I just want to fix it.
I did fill out the user CP but just in case this is a 4.6 2000 f150 s cab with a 2 inch body lift and 33 x 12.5 tires.

1. Have you scanned the OBD2 for trouble codes?
2. Does the rattling go away if you use high octane full premium gas?
3. When was the last time the spark plugs and fuel filter were changed?

2.No, I have used premium gas from more than one staion with no chang. it dose not sound like denotation or pinging. Also I have a friend that is a tech at ford and he told me that these trucks are not desgined to run premium. he sad the heat can warp the head. (if he lived closer i would take it to him but...)
3. Spark plugs 2 coil packs and the fuel filter where change less than 6 months ago.
I would say your are experiencing delayed operation of the electric valves on the transmission valve body from metal that has flushed thru the system.
Hope it's not that bad but be prepaired for anything.
Been their already from heavey towing, balloning a converter and causing torrington bearings to grind apart and get thru the transmission with the fluid.
For the last 4 years, I have been running a "LEVEL 10" bullet proof trans build in my machine.
Good luck.

Ok... so update. Now when i am in drive at a stop i am ideling at 850rpms as if the truck is in park. When i got home yesterday I parked it close to the curb but my foot on the brake and hit the gas (lightly). NO movement not even a little. I would expect that the truck would at leate attempt to move forward but nope. nothing. So am I correct that this is thie converter? Got to find out quick this is a DD.
Also :
Got a scaneer and there are no codes.
I am using motorcraft plugs.
Another thing is that the odometer light in the dash keeps turnning off and on?
thanks in advance
Also :
1. It should, but if the OD light ever flashed, there's a tranny code in there.
3. What brand of plugs did you use?

From what it sounds like it is the converter. Mine also had the rattling noise part throttle at about 1500 rpms. Never actually fixed mine though.
Odo light flickering is the connection in the cluster, mine would go off and on sometimes. I just gave it a good whack on the top of the dash and it usually came back on.

It's not the converter doing this.
Do you know how a converter works?
What is (not) happening is the PCM is supposed to signal the transmission main pressure valve, thru the trans selector, to open a path for the fluid to compress clutches that engage the gear drive.
A converter is a hyraulic fluid coupling between two turbines that drives the front main fluid pump for the valves to act on per instruction from the PCM.
These never go "open" to drive from the engine unless there is very low or no fluid in the converter for the turbine assembly to work with.
Other valves do routing tranfer of fluid in the valve body to engage clutches and servos for other gears, overdrive; and converter lock-up, after a min speeds are attained for shift to the next gear.
A good shop should have a test set to be able to operate all the valves independent of the PCM or monitor their operation in real time.

new update. going to work this morning and the radio was turrnning on and off. i looked at the battery meeter and it wasnt in the read but it was as close as it could get . i hit the gas when the light went green and boom all the way back to normal. I am pretty sure my battery is good so i am thinking altinator. Think this could cause my other isues?
