03 FX4 4x4 not engaging?

So i found out last night the hard way that the 4x4 is not kicking in. Its the dash **** type, when you click over to 4x4 or low range you can hear it click in the dash, but no response to the front wheels. They are not turning at all. The light come on, on the dash and low range works at the rear axle. But no 4wd. Any idea where i should start? Maybe the seleniod? How much are those, how hard to change? Any other suggestions?

first thin to check is the vacuum lines to the solenoids on the firewall next to the battery. They have a tendency to break right there. Any battery acid at all gets on them and there history.. Then if that aint it you need to diagnose that system. the how to's for that at over in the drivetrain section.

mine had the same symptoms and it was the vaccumm line. I cut the line and slid a larger rubber hose over each end about 4 inches (tight fit) as a splice. One of those easy free fixes

I had the same problem with mine, but mine ended up being the shift fork in the front differential.

Ok, so ive narrowed it down to something in the diff. Everything else is clicking and kicking in like it should. Vaccum lines all seem good, accuators are goin in. So I assume that it MAY be the shift fork in mine as well. What does a repair like that usually cost? How hard is it to yourself? How much is the fork itself? any pointers before i dig into the front end?
